Six New Year’s resolutions for a better planet

The beginning of a New Year means making new resolutions. How about making small changes in our behaviour this year that could lead to a big change and a healthier planet for us all? These are six simple pledges for the planet we can all do in 2015.

1. I will take shorter showers.

Taking shorter showers is one easy way to reduce our water footprint.  Every action we take, both big and small, helps support the overall health of our rivers and lakes. People need water, but nature needs water too. We need to leave enough water flowing in our rivers to sustain wildlife and their habitat. So this year let’s not waste a drop and take shorter showers.

2. I will unplug chargers and electronics when not in use.

It’s a pretty common practice that we may all be guilty of, like leaving a laptop plugged in all night. So this year let’s make a habit of unplugging chargers and electronics, and save energy in 2015.

3. I will only buy as much as I can eat.

Wasting food is like throwing money in the garbage, so let’s work to help our wallets and the planet this year. The bulk of our water footprint comes from the water used to produce the goods and services we consume every day. All the food we eat, the clothes we buy and the products we use require water to be produced – and in some cases, in surprisingly large quantities. So when we consume these commodities, the water used to produce them becomes part of our water footprint. Buy only as much as you can eat this year.

4. I will always carry a reusable shopping bag.

At the spring 2013 Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, over 11,000 plastic bags were collected, making it the third largest polluter on our shores. So this year, let’s pledge to the planet to always bring reusable bags and diminish the use of plastic bags, so they don’t end up in our shores.

5. I will separate my trash and recycle it.

It’s our responsibility to separate our garbage and recyclables. So this year let’s pay close attention and follow labels to ensure the right waste is going in the right places. In 2015, let’s makes sure litter does not end up where it shouldn’t be like in nature!

6. I will spend more time connecting with nature.

Connecting with nature can be so simple, it can mean going outside a taking a walk while observing our natural environment. Or we can take it one-step further and start a meetup with friends, where you pick-up trash and recyclables in your neighbourhood or getting involved in the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. So this year, get out and enjoy the beautiful changing seasons this country has to offer and working towards a better planet for us all!

What are your New Year’s resolutions for a better planet?
